I’ve seen a look in dogs’ eyes, a quickly vanishing look of amazed contempt, and I am convinced that dogs think humans are nuts.

Folks around here say that there’s nothing better than camping with a four-legged pal. Here are some tips and questions to ask yourself to make the adventure fun for all.

Does the area you are traveling allow pets? National Parks largely allow pets but make sure to check against local regulations.

What gear to pack and how to prepare to camp with your pet?

  • Food and water. Don’t forget the T.R.E.A.T.S.

  • Lesh, in most states and locations.

  • Pack out your pet’s poop or toss it in the nearest trash can.

  • Most recent vaccines and tags.

Where is your pet going to sleep?

  • Does your dog have a sleeping bag or a bed?

  • Is your tent big enough for an additional four legs?

Protect your pet’s paws. If your dog is anything like mine, she has sensitive paws. Watch out for:

  • Hot pavement or concrete

  • Burrs, and goat heads

  • Ice and snow

  • Glass and other sharp debris

  • Ticks and other bugs that bite and bother your pet while spreading disease.
