CAMPING IN COLORADO
Once a Cretaceous ocean, the remote South Platte River basin of Weld County, Colorado, is home to Pawnee National Grassland.
Towering above the high plains, Pawnee Buttes host nesting birds of prey. Decedents now circle and soar over dry washes where fossil hunters have flocked since 1870.
CAMPING IN WASHINGTON
A crumbling stairway leads into a smoke grey sky and a concrete slab keeping overwatch in the remote territory west of Chelan Lake. The remains underfoot are becoming a part of the surrounding terrain; you have to know where to look. Fire-watchers built various versions of a Junior Point Lookout structure starting in 1933 along the rocky mountain ridge with a perch that allows unique views and those who make an effort a 360 view of the world around them.
Is it even a trip to Washington without a visit to a remote fire outlook? Here’s the drive back down from Salmo Mountain Lookout following along the 2 mile Forest Service spur, NF-270.
